Crypto Scam: Fake Ledger Reps Target Users

Ledger imposters have sent physical letters to the users attempting to get their secret phrase to gain control of their funds. On 29th April, a Ledger user – Jacob Canfield posted a picture of the letter he received from the scammers. The letter stated that he needs to update his wallet for better security. In the letter, the scammer deviously gave an undercurrent that if the wallet is not updated it will result in loss of access to his funds.

A seed phrase or pass phrase is a string of 12 or 24 words that gives access to a crypto wallet. Anyone who has the seed phrase has complete control of the funds.

Also, another similar incident happened in April 2025. A Ledger reseller received similar messages via physical mail.

The Ledger team responded to Canfield’s post,

“Ledger will never call, DM [direct message], or ask for your 24-word recovery phrase. If someone does, it’s a scam.”

According to Canfield, these events could be the result of a data security breach that happened in 2020. Approximately, 270,000 users data that included their device details, contact and addresses. Another major security hazard happened when users received Ledger wallets that were tampered with.
