Ethereum Co-founder plans to launch Proof-of-Ink for Web3: Here’s what we know so far.

Parity Technologies is set to revolutionize digital identity with its upcoming Web3 individuality solution, “Proof-of-Ink.” This innovative mechanism, expected to launch in the fourth quarter of 2024, aims to provide users with a privacy-preserving way to prove their digital citizenship through a unique, algorithmically generated tattoo.

Gavin Wood, co-founder of Ethereum, Polkadot, and Kusama, unveiled this breakthrough during his keynote address at the Web3 Summit in Berlin. He emphasized that this new identity solution addresses a critical gap in the Web3 landscape, essential for the technology’s mainstream adoption.

Proof-of-Ink: A Closer Look

The “Proof-of-Ink” solution will require users to get a tattoo featuring a unique design generated by the blockchain. These tattoos will be placed on a specific part of the body, enhancing privacy while ensuring individuality. Each tattoo design is created using random numbers generated by the blockchain, making every design distinct and verifiable on-chain.

To participate, users will need to pay a small fee in Polkadot (DOT) tokens or use vouchers distributed within the Web3 community. This fee serves as a Sybil resistance measure, preventing spam and ensuring the authenticity of each request.

Once the tattoo is complete, users must upload a video documenting the final three minutes of the tattooing process. This video will serve as conclusive evidence of the user’s Web3 individuality.

The Path to Mainstream Adoption

Wood highlighted the importance of privacy in achieving true digital individuality. He referenced Edward Snowden’s advocacy for financial privacy, stressing that “Proof-of-Ink” aims to ensure users can prove their identity without exposing their personal information. This privacy-centric approach is seen as vital for protecting users from financial censorship in a decentralized internet.

While “Proof-of-Ink” is set to launch by the end of 2024, Wood hinted at two additional digital identity solutions currently under development, though details remain under wraps.

As the Web3 ecosystem continues to evolve, Parity Technologies’ “Proof-of-Ink” could play a pivotal role in fostering a more decentralized, user-centric internet, aligning with the broader vision of Web3 as a public good for all humanity.
